San Martino square

| Address : | Piazza San Martino - Lucca |
San Martino's Square on which the Cathedral rises, is among the most harmonious and stimulating places in town. The balance of the complex structure converges in the buildings overlooking it, yet being typical of very different periods and styles. An admirable example of environmental respect and perfect urban positioning is represented by Palazzo Micheletti.
The excellent use of the ashlars-work which elegantly marks doors, windows, lintels and corners, is for sure a deed of Bartolomeo Ammannati. One of the masters of this way of working on - and yet not upsetting - the existing architectonic environment is Lorenzo Nottolini, who in 1832 built the circular basin in Piazza Antelminelli. Although it is very much ruined and badly restored, the Casa dell'Opera del Duomo (i.e. the Cathedral Society) next to the church, is an important example of local 13th century.
