Fossi Street - Lucca

So called for the ditch running in the centre of it and dividing it lengthwise, Via dei Fossi is one of the most suggestive streets in town. For two thirds, from the Botanical Gardens to the Madonna dello Stellario, it runs along the outside perimeter of the Medieval walls, of which there still is a majestic gate devoted to the two Saints Gervasio and Protasio, commonly called "Portone dell'Annunziata". Made of grey sandstone bordered by white limestone and originally decorated with sculptures (now lost), it is flanked by two semi-circular towers, whose crenellation has also been destroyed.
