The church of Sant' Alessandro

| Address : | Piazza Sant' Alessandro - Lucca |
Built around the middle of the 11 th century, Sant' Alessandro is the only church in Lucca from this time not to have undergone substantial transformation and re-management: the only elements from a later period are the decoration of the completion of the apse, the typically Lombard hanging little arches and the 15th century tabernacle placed over the side portal. This building is very interesting also because it is the most complete and perfect example of the early Romanesque style in Luc¬a, which was very different and independent from the Lombard and Pisan currents.
The church is almost completely without decorations, but its beauty is due to the pure and essential architectonic elements: the white hangings bordered in light grey, the very simple decoration around the small windows, the classic portal.
The Romanesque capitals are exceptionally beautiful. Most of the columns and capitals derive from Roman buildings.
